The site

Nalanda Mahavihara is the ruined Buddhist great monastery of medieval Magadha in Bihar, eastern India, founded around 427 CE under the Gupta emperor Kumaragupta I. Often called the world's first residential university, it operated for nearly a thousand years and ranked among the greatest centres of learning in the ancient world. Sustained by Indian and Javanese patrons alike, it nourished the arts, culture and scholarship of India's so-called Golden Age.
