The site

The Leshan Giant Buddha is a colossal 71-metre stone statue carved into a river cliff in Sichuan Province, China, completed in 804 during the Tang dynasty. Cut from red sandstone at the confluence of the Min and Dadu rivers, it faces the sacred Mount Emei with the waters flowing beneath its feet. It is the largest and tallest stone Buddha in the world, and by far the tallest pre-modern statue anywhere, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
