The site

Khami is a ruined stone city west of Bulawayo in Zimbabwe, built around 1450 CE and occupied until 1683. Raised in the tradition of Great Zimbabwe, its citadel, walls and terraces made it the capital of the Kingdom of Butua under the Torwa dynasty; its platforms are faced with intricate patterned stonework — chevron, herringbone and checkerboard — among the finest drystone building in southern Africa. Now a national monument, Khami became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
