The site

In northern Jordan lie the ruins of Jerash, known in antiquity as Gerasa, a city that flourished through Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine times as one of the Decapolis. Settlement here reaches back to a Neolithic site with human remains dating around 7500 BCE. An important center in early Christian times, Jerash preserves notable early churches, several converted from temples, before the 749 CE Galilee earthquake toppled much of the city.
