The site

Gyeongju, once known as Seorabeol, is a coastal city in southeastern South Korea that served as the capital of the kingdom of Silla from 57 BCE to 935 CE. At its height between the 7th and 9th centuries, Silla ruled two-thirds of the Korean peninsula, and its capital ranked among the largest cities in the world. The city and its surroundings are studded with a vast concentration of archaeological sites and royal tombs from that thousand-year reign.
