The site

Jebel Barkal is a flat-topped sandstone mesa rising 104 meters beside the Nile in Nubia, northern Sudan. Sacred to both ancient Kush and Egyptian occupiers, its base holds an extensive complex of temples, sanctuaries and pyramid tombs built from around 1450 BCE. The mountain and its ceremonial ruins were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003.
