The site

Knossos is an ancient urban center on Crete, occupied from the Neolithic into the first millennium AD and the largest and best-known site of the Minoan civilisation. It is dominated by the monumental Palace of Minos, generally read as an administrative, economic, religious and ceremonial complex, with the first palace raised around 1900 BC atop a hill already settled for millennia. Often called the oldest city in Europe, Knossos now lies within the urban edge of Heraklion.
