The site

Bibracte is a fortified Celtic hilltop town in France, occupied from around 200 BCE to 100 CE. As a major oppidum it was a centre of Gaulish settlement in the last centuries before and during the Roman conquest; it was here that Vercingetorix was proclaimed leader of the Gaulish revolt, and here that Julius Caesar wintered and wrote part of his account of the Gallic Wars. Its ramparts and dwellings offer a window onto urban life among the Celts of Iron Age Gaul.
