The site
Baelo Claudia lies on the shore of the Strait of Gibraltar near Bolonia in southern Spain, a Roman town that began as a humble fishing village and trading hub some two thousand years ago. Its ruins reveal a theatre, temples and an aqueduct, the trappings of a wealthy Mediterranean port that thrived under Emperor Claudius. Battered by earthquakes, the town declined and was abandoned by the sixth century.
