The site

Apamea is a Hellenistic city in western Syria, one of several bearing the name given in honor of Apama, the Sogdian wife of Seleucus I Nicator. Founded around 300 BCE, it endured as a settlement for well over a thousand years. Now on UNESCO's tentative list, its long avenues mark it as a major center of the Seleucid and later Roman Near East.
