The site

Aksum is a town in northern Ethiopia that served as the historic capital of the Aksumite Empire. Occupied from around 100 BCE into the tenth century CE, the site preserves the empire's necropolis, palaces, and monuments, which UNESCO recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1980 for their historic value. It long stood as a leading destination for visitors drawn to Ethiopia's ancient past.
