The site
Tzintzuntzan is a pre-Columbian city of the Purépecha, or Tarascan, people in Michoacán, Mexico, flourishing from about 1350 to 1522 CE as the capital of the Tarascan state. Its signature monuments are the yácatas, ceremonial pyramids set on a great platform overlooking Lake Pátzcuaro. As the seat of the Tarascans — rivals the Aztecs never conquered — Tzintzuntzan stood at the heart of one of Mesoamerica's most powerful states until the Spanish arrival.
