The site
Taputapuatea marae is a large Polynesian temple complex at Opoa on the eastern coast of Raiatea, in use from about 1000 to 1820 CE. Its assemblage of marae and stone platforms once made it the central temple and religious heart of Eastern Polynesia. Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2017, it stands as a testimony to traditional eastern Polynesian culture and its political and spiritual life.
