The site
Olympia, in western Greece, is the sanctuary and settlement where the ancient Olympic Games were held, a Greek religious and athletic centre occupied from around 1000 BCE until 426 CE. This UNESCO World Heritage site clusters temples and sacred precincts that gave the games their name and their gods their honours. Today Olympia remains one of Greece's most visited archaeological sites, drawing close to half a million people a year.
