The site

Moundville Archaeological Site sits on the Black Warrior River in Hale County, Alabama, and was the political and ceremonial heart of a Mississippian chiefdom between the 11th and 16th centuries. Its core is a rectangular plaza framed by 29 flat-topped platform mounds across some 185 acres. Second in scale only to Cahokia among classic Middle Mississippian sites, it is now a National Historic Landmark administered by the University of Alabama.
