The site

Hadrian's Wall is the Roman frontier fortification of the province of Britannia, begun in AD 122 under the Emperor Hadrian. Running 73 miles across northern England from Wallsend on the Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway, it was a stone wall flanked by great ditches and manned from forts, milecastles, and turrets. The largest Roman archaeological feature in Britain, its garrisons guarded the empire's northern edge until around 400 CE, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
