The site

Buried in the jungle of northern Petén, Guatemala, El Mirador is one of the great Maya cities of the Preclassic period, thriving roughly 600 BCE to 150 CE. Its crowning feature is La Danta, among the tallest and most voluminous pyramids in the world. Broad white causeways, some forty meters wide, once linked El Mirador to neighboring cities in what researchers call an early highway system.
