The site
Cholula, in central Mexico, holds the Great Pyramid of Cholula, a colossal ceremonial mound raised over centuries by Mesoamerican peoples associated with Toltec and later Aztec traditions. Occupied from around 300 BCE to 1500 CE, the pyramid grew through successive layers into one of the largest monuments by volume ever built. Today a colonial church crowns its grassed summit, marking a site of worship for more than a thousand years.
