The site

The Carnac stones form an exceptionally dense collection of megalithic monuments near the south coast of Brittany in northwestern France. More than three thousand standing stones were hewn from local granite and raised by the region's pre-Celtic Neolithic people, arranged in long alignments alongside dolmens, tumuli and single menhirs. It is the largest such collection in the world, with some stones possibly dating as far back as 4500 BCE.
